TACTILE INDICATORS

The Benefits

Current information provided for emergency evacuation, such as signage and emergency lighting, is fundamentally flawed as they can become quickly obliterated by rising smoke, rendering them ineffective. So low mounted lighting is the answer - isn’t it?

Well, in fact, it's only half the answer. Remember, smoke also irritates your eyes, making it difficult to see. Until now, every emergency wayguidance system has relied entirely on visual referencing. The SOS Waypoint system with its unique and patented tactile indicators dramatically changes that by giving directional information without the necessity of sight - an innovation in public safety which also complies with the Disability Discrimination Act.

In today’s society, which is increasingly sympathetic and aware of the need to provide for those who are visually impaired or blind, conventional signage has limited use, as they are solely a visual aid.

The Waypoint wall system utilises only two tactile indicators to inform the public of the direction of the nearest exit. The profile and feel of the indicator informs the evacuee that he/she is travelling towards the nearest exit, away from the nearest exit or to make a 90 degree change of direction.

The Waypoint door plate has another set of tactile cues to inform the user that the door is used as a fire exit door in the event of an emergency. The door plate can also incorporate a tactile direction marker to inform the user in which direction he should proceed after passing through the door.
